Grade 8/9

Beginning in Grade 8, subject matter begins to become more refined and divided into some subjects. There is a high level of individualization available for these courses and a wide range of curriculum options.

Grade 8 and 9 students must take English, Math, Socials, Science, PE, Career Education, and one each of Arts Education and ADST. Listed below are descriptions for available elective courses in Grade 8 and 9. Grade 8 students must also compete a Second Language.

Arts Education

We encourage meaningful integration of visual arts, music, drama, and dance in student learning, allowing Pathways Academy students to explore creativity and self-expression while gaining an appreciation for artistic processes and cultural perspectives.

Dance

Students explore movement, rhythm, and creative expression through various dance styles while developing physical coordination and performance confidence.

Drama

Through improvisation, role-play, and scene work, students build communication skills, empathy, and an understanding of dramatic storytelling.

Music

Students engage with music through performance, listening, and composition, developing their musical literacy and appreciation across genres.

Visual Arts

Students explore a variety of media and techniques to express ideas visually, while learning the elements and principles of art and design.

Medley

Students may select two or more Arts 8 disciplines (Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Arts) to create a full year of creative exploration and skill-building across the arts.

Applied Skills, Design, and Technologies (ADST)

ADST introduces students to design thinking, problem solving, and hands-on skills in areas like coding, sewing, woodworking, and digital media. Projects encourage creativity, critical thinking, and real-world application of knowledge.

Computational Thinking 8

Students develop problem-solving skills and logical reasoning through introductory coding and algorithmic thinking.

Computers and Communication Devices 8

Information and Communication Technology 9

Students learn to use digital tools safely and effectively, focusing on communication, productivity, and digital citizenship.

Digital Literacy 8

This course builds students’ confidence and responsibility in using technology for research, communication, and creative expression.

Robotics 8

Electronics and Robotics 9

Students design, build, and program simple robots, combining creativity with STEM concepts like engineering and coding.

Drafting

An introduction to technical drawing and design, where students use both manual and digital tools to create plans and models.

Entrepreneurship and Marketing

Students explore business basics, branding, and financial literacy by developing and pitching their own product or service ideas.

Food Studies

Students learn basic cooking skills, kitchen safety, and nutrition while gaining an understanding of food systems and healthy eating.

Media Arts

Students explore digital storytelling through photography, video, and graphic design, developing visual communication and editing skills.

Metalwork

Hands-on learning introduces students to metalworking tools and techniques, focusing on safety, design, and craftsmanship.

Power Technology

Students investigate energy sources, simple machines, and mechanical systems through hands-on projects in power and motion.

Textiles

This course introduces basic sewing and design skills while encouraging creativity and practical application in textile projects.

Woodwork

Students learn to safely use tools and materials to create wood-based projects, gaining skills in measurement, design, and craftsmanship.

ADST Exploration (Modules Course)

Students select two or more ADST options to build a full year of hands-on learning across applied design and technology disciplines.
