Grades K-7

From Kindergarten through Grade 7, subject matter is integrated as much as possible. There is a high level of individualization available for these courses and a wide range of curriculum options. Students at these grade levels must take English, Math, Socials, Science, plus the following subjects integrated into their learning: Career ED, PE, Fine Arts, and Applied Skills. Grade 5-8 students must also take a second language.

English Language Arts

English Language Arts captures the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. We are committed to offering resources that reflect best practices in reading and writing instruction (structured literacy). We provide evidence-based resources such as All About Learning and Explode the Code to help build a solid foundation in phonemic awareness, decoding, and comprehension. All Grade 1 students are offered literacy screening.

Mathematics

The BC Mathematics curriculum encourages the development of numeracy, problem-solving, and logical reasoning skills. We support students with a variety of high-quality, flexible resources that cater to diverse learning styles including Math U See, Teaching Textbooks, and Singapore Math. These programs help students build deep conceptual understanding and fluency with numbers, laying the groundwork for confidence and success in mathematics.

Science

The Science curriculum emphasizes inquiry, exploration, and understanding of the natural world. In the primary years, we encourage place-based, experiential learning that connects students to their local environment and fosters curiosity. As students progress, we support a gradual transition to more formal science instruction using trusted programs such as Apologia and Generation Genius, which support deeper learning in scientific concepts and thinking skills.

Social Studies

This area of study encompasses history, geography, and civics, helping students develop an understanding of the world and their place in it. We encourage families to enrich learning through community exploration and meaningful field trips. We also want students also engage with high-quality literature to build historical thinking skills and deepen their connection to people, places, and events across time and cultures, so many of our learning plans feature literature kits from our well-stocked library.
